The Seasons they go Round and Round

I was listening today to the wonderful Joni Mitchell song. I heard “We’re captive on the carousel of time” It struck me that it was such a detached perspective, I read she wrote it for a friend I guess to give him perspective. The lyrics are prescient, at the time she wrote it she would not have the perspective of a long life looking back. We can also never tell what is ahead of us and will come around the bend, no matter how we think, we can never anticipate them.

I heard a beautiful live recording by her doing the song and she is relatively young, the song is really beautiful hearing the lyrics again after reading the lyrics. I have heard many versions of the song and love it.

I woke up in the middle of the night hearing it in my head. I have been in two long relationships with many ups and downs and beautiful things along the way. Looking back over them and the way the patterns repeat within the same relationship and in comparison between the two relationships. Also in both relationships I have been through many years and many seasons which I have loved aspects of all.

Of course the literal and metaphorical reading of “The seasons they go round and round,” within a year or a few years, but also the seasons of life. I love the way her song goes through several phases of life, I think she could write some additional verses from later in life, but it’s only me looking back at things, I am sure she has done the same through her life.
